Branding – Jess + Nate Studios

Once in awhile, I do some branding work. This time I had the opportunity to design some business collateral for my photography friends, Jess and Nate of Jess + Nate Studios. They recently went through a company name change. They then contacted me to create an announcement explaining the reason for the name change, new business cards, a notecard and a folder to house invoices, etc.

The business cards and notecards were letterpress printed with a beautiful blind emboss on the back of the business card. For the announcement we did fun mailing labels and vintage photography stamps. The exterior flap of the folder was die cut to mimic the chevron pattern.

On a side note, to see Jess and Nate’s mad skillz and fabulousness check them out here. They also did our family pictures a  few years ago. You can see them here!

Production – Christmas Card Part 2

Production. Sometimes the prettiest part…

Christmas Card 2012

This year has been rather crazy for us. We had another baby and purchased a new home that required lots of renovations in a short amount of time. Needless to say, I have fallen behind on my correspondence. So this year, I decided that it was high time I got caught up and sent everything out together.

In a little blue box, I sent our son’s birth announcement, our moving announcement and Christmas card all together. Tied up in a pretty little package and mailed to family and friends with lots of vintage stamps. My friend Holly from the Paper Nickel gifted me the baby buggy stamp in honor of Callahan.

Since having two kids, our life has been a ZOO! So I ran with the concept, creating both a birth announcement and moving announcement modeled after an information card from the zoo. I had a custom stamp made and stamped all of the glassine envelopes with our new family “crest.” I sealed the moving announcement with the zoo animals inside the envelopes and taped them shut with fabric tape.

Catching up on 2011…

If you haven’t noticed, I have been rather absent from the blog over the last three months. To put it bluntly, the last half of 2011 has been a clusterf#&k, filled with extreme highs and some lows. For starters, in July, we welcomed our second son, Callahan James. A sweet boy with strawberry blonde hair and blue eyes. See more about Cal here. Having one kid is fun…two is no joke.

Three months later, kind of on a whim, we decided to put our first home up for rent and purchase a new one. We found it over Labor Day weekend. Saw it on a Friday, put in an offer on a Saturday and they accepted on that Monday. It was in need a lot of updates, but we kind of like doing that sort of thing, so we delved head on into home improvements. We moved in over Halloween weekend, and here we are, January 1 and there are still plenty of boxes that need unpacking. It has been crazy, hard and stressful, and sometimes I wonder if we made the right decision, but I keep reminding myself that it will get better and we are very lucky to be able to do what we did.

The kitchen was the most work, but the most exciting part of the renovation. We knocked out a wall, got new appliances and countertops and refinished all of the wood floors throughout.

But the bathroom is my favorite of all. Scalamandre Zebra wallpaper in Masai Red and hexagonal retro tiles. Every time people see it, they ask, “how did you pick that paper?” Royal Tenenbaums. My favorite movie. Watch it.

We did take some time off and took Campbell on his first “trip,” that wasn’t Grandma and Papa’s cottage. We spent a few days on Mackinac Island. We drove over the bridge, threw rocks in the big lake, rode bikes around the island and saw LOTS of horses. It was a great escape!

My career high of the year…THANK YOU Heather Lee and the rest of the crew at Brides Magazine. You make a little stationer from Michigan feel pretty special!

The health issues of our family members have been the hardest thing to deal with this past year. My mother was diagnosed with the very early stages of breast cancer. She has since had the cells removed and went through radiation without too much discomfort and her first mammogram came back clear. Matt lost his Grandmother this spring, and I lost my Grandmother over Thanksgiving.

My Grandma Helen, my kindred spirit…she was small in stature, but one tough, determined, Irish lady. She taught me the importance of working hard and getting a good education, so that you would never have to rely on others, to stand up for your convictions and be proud that you are a member of the Campbell clan. She lived to be 93 and had a full and happy life, surrounded by many that loved her. In her own words, “I am ancient, but I am blessed.” Rest peacefully Grandma. I think about you every day.

2011 was NUTS. Both good and bad. I think I have never been so unorganized in my life! BUT there is no time like the present and I fully intend to OWN 2012. Starting today, with this blog. I promise to be more current. Check back this week to see our birth announcement/moving announcement/Christmas card that just went out last week…waaaaay overdue but better late than never.

Happy New Year and I hope to see more of you in 2012!

Happy Fall.

A Southern Boy Meets a Midwest Girl

This letterpress suite was designed for Hanna, a midwest girl from Michigan and Powell, a southern boy from Arkansas. I created a monogram with imagery that was representative of their home states. When I think of the south, I envision plantation style homes with big porches, couples sitting on their rocking chairs sipping lemonade. When I think of Michigan, lots of beautiful images come to mind, cherries being one of them. I incorporated cherry blossoms along with the rocking chairs to complete the look.

I love that her response option was “I’ll be there with bells on!” It’s one of my favorite expressions.

Motown, Rock n’ Roll Inspired Invitations

Here’s another rock n’ roll inspired invitation for you. When Katie first emailed me, she sent me examples of vintage concert posters from the 50′s and 60′s. She wanted her invitations to resemble that look with an emphasis on Motown, yet keep it elegant enough to appease the moms.

Her reception was held at the historic Detroit Yacht Club on Belle Isle. Her colors of navy and kelly green along with the banners and stars evoke a nautical feel.

The timeline events and graphics are typical of a concert poster. She also wanted a response card “ticket”, in which she stamped in the number of guests invited.

Classic Rock n’ Roll Inspired Invitations

Lauren and John had a very clear vision about what they wanted for their wedding invitations. They are both huge fans of classic rock n’ roll and wanted that to play a big part of their wedding invitations. Earlier this year, I designed their save the dates for them. They had really cute engagement photos taken and I used them to design a vintage looking concert poster.

The wedding invitations were intended to resemble a concert poster as well. It was offset printed on 100% cotton paper. Large sections of solid ink when printed on the cotton paper tends to get a mottled look which gives it that vintage feel. I also added a “distressing” layer in photoshop to help with the faded, roughed-up look.

Colorado Wedding Accessories

Here’s a little brightness for you on this gloomy, rainy day. I posted Hillary’s colorado save the dates and wedding invitations awhile back, now here are her wedding accessories. I made more had lettered initial tags, that were tied around mason jars at the reception. She gave out pots of honey as a favor, which the tags were tied to as well. I made paper cones that were filled with flower petals that were tossed on the bride and the groom after the ceremony. Staggered ceremony programs, which was a first for me and now a new product! Table menus for each person, table numbers and place cards. The place cards fit inside a glassine envelope, which was labeled with the guests’ name. The actual tables were named after various mountain ranges in the area. Last but not least, welcome cards. One for the wedding party and one for the guests.
